Led by, Cal Athletics, construction on the Spieker Pool replastering project will begin Friday, July 28.
This is necessary maintenance to preserve the long-term health of the pool and will require Spieker Pool to be unavailable for use for several weeks.
All efforts are being made to minimize the impact on Rec Sports members.
Programs and activities typically occurring in Spieker Pool will be relocated to either Strawberry Canyon Pool or Legends Aquatic Center. Please see below for the location and schedule of the relocated activities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
To preserve the long-term health of the pool for the benefit of the entire campus community and all who use Spieker Aquatics Complex, regular maintenance needs to occur. This project will include replastering the entire pool, replacing broken and chipped tiles, and installing new LED lights in the pool.
Yes, the new Legends Aquatic Center across Bancroft will be made available to Rec Sports members for lap swim and related programming. See the Lap Swim Schedule for the most up-to-date days and times.
While we were able to add additional morning hours to Spieker Pool earlier this summer to help offset the temporary closure at Hearst Pool, those hours are not available at Legends given the practice needs of Cal’s intercollegiate aquatic teams.
Additional morning hours have been added to the schedule at Strawberry Canyon Pool Tuesday through Thursday (see above).
Most importantly, the work is required to ensure Spieker remains a safe and usable facility. While there is no perfect time for the pool to undergo such a maintenance project, late summer is the least impactful time of the year with most students away from campus and fewer practices and competitions for Cal’s intercollegiate aquatics teams.
Heart Pool Update
Rec Sports leadership has continued to have fruitful discussions with our partners at Physical Education, who manage the facility and its maintenance, regarding the status of Hearst Pool.
We are pleased to announce that the project is ahead of schedule and will reopen Monday, August 7.
The Lap Swim Schedule will be updated to reflect this shortly.
