The Recreational Sports Facility is the University’s largest fitness center, housing many of the activities you love.
The Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) holds over 100,000 square feet of activity space. The vast space allows the pursuit of a plethora of interests and pastimes; if you’re looking for it, we’ve got it! RSF accommodations include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 3 weight rooms, seven basketball courts, seven racquetball/handball courts, six squash courts, treadmills, elliptical trainers, stairmasters, rowing machines and stationary bikes. Additionally, there is space reserved for volleyball, badminton, group exercise classes, martial arts, and table tennis. The possibilities are endless!
Who Can Use It?
The RSF facilities are open to all Rec Sports members. Non-members can purchase a Rec Sports Day Pass (available at the Customer Service Center or Pro Shop Cafe) to gain access to the RSF facilities for 24 hours. Be prepared to present proof of membership or purchase at the front desk.

Pro Shop Cafe
For the convenience of our guests, the Pro Shop sells a wide variety of drinks, salads, sandwiches, snacks, and sundry items. Managed by Cal Dining, the café has a small eating area with a view of Spieker Pool and two satellite television monitors for watching your favorite sports channels.
The cafe is located in the lobby of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF). If you are entering the building, it is past the Customer Service Center on the right.
A stretching area is available in Court 3 or Court 4 on the right of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) Atrium. The stretching room, which rotates monthly between Courts 3 and 4, is equipped with mats and swiss balls for all your recovery needs. The rooms are available for stretching during all RSF open hours.
We’ve got treadmills, stairmasters, elliptical trainers, rowing machines, stationary bikes, and more. Our machines – over 100 and counting – are there for you in the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) Atrium and on the second floor (up the stairs at the left of the Atrium) whenever the RSF is open. We recently added all new LifeFitness and Matrix equipment, see our website for more details.
Indoor Racquet Courts
Racquetball, Handball, Squash, or Table Tennis: whatever the racquet, we’ve got a court for you. Located to the right of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) Atrium with entrances between cardio machines, all courts are available during regular RSF hours. Court reservations can be made at the RSF locker room or by calling (510) 642-8345.
Our three Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) weight rooms total 8,500 square feet and are equipped with Cybex machines, Cybex VR2 stations, a complete free weight set-up, Iron Grip and Tri Bar dumbbells, adjustable benches, Olympic squat racks, Gravitron pull-up stations and much, much more.
Find the weight rooms in the first opening on the left of the Atrium and visit them during regular RSF hours to experience the variety!
If you’re on the lookout for some new friends who love to play pick-up as much as you do, you can find them in the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) Field House. The Field House holds three courts reserved for Open Recreation basketball, volleyball, badminton, and more! Check out our Open Recreation schedules to find out when you can play.
The Field House can be found at the end of the RSF Atrium. Once you enter the Atrium, continue straight, past all of the cardio machines, until you reach a large space holding three basketball courts. If you come across the courts, you’re in the Field House!
Our expansive Combatives Room hosts a number of our Group Exercise and Instructional Classes. The bounty of space is ideal for all of the moving and grooving our instructors will have you doing.
To locate the Combatives Room, enter the Atrium, the large area where the cardio machines can be found on the left side of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), and keep going until you encounter the second opening on the left. You will find two large rooms. The Combatives Room is the left room.
The Field House isn’t the only place in the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) where you can shoot some hoops or start a volleyball rally. The Blue Gym might become your new favorite venue for a pick-up game! Check out our Open Recreation schedules for open hours.
The Blue Gym is located on the third floor of the Recreational Sports Facility. To access it, face the RSF Atrium and find the stairs on the left. Walk up the two sets of stairs until you find two doors opening onto basketball courts on your left. The Blue Gym is on the left side. There is also an elevator on the left of the RSF, across from the Pro Shop Cafe, that can provide an ADA accessible entrance to the third floor. Once you reach the third floor, a staff member will need to assist you in entering the Gym.
The Field House isn’t the only place in the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) where you can shoot some hoops or start a volleyball rally. The Gold Gym might become your new favorite venue for a pick-up game! Check out our Open Recreation schedules for open hours.

Olympic Lifting Center
The basement of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) is a hidden gem that houses multiple racquetball courts, two of which are home to our Olympic Lifting Center. Take an Olympic Lifting or CrossFit class or purchase Olympic Lifting Drop-In Hours to take advantage of the top-notch equipment that will help you reach all of your strength and fitness goals.
If you are just entering the RSF, the door to the RSF basement can be found across from the Customer Service Center on the left, just before reaching the RSF Atrium. Once you find it, ask one of the front desk staff to open the door for you. To locate the Olympic Lifting Center, continue down both flights of stairs to the basement. Once you reach the bottom, continue straight ahead until you find Court 14.
Because we want to ensure that everyone has a positive workout experience with as much room as possible, we don’t allow bags beyond the front desk of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF). Thankfully, we have spacious and accommodating locker rooms where you can store your belongings while you sweat it out.
The locker rooms are located in the back of the RSF. If you are entering the building, keep going straight until you pass the Pro Shop and continue through the hallway straight ahead. The locker rooms will be on the right at the end of the hallway and the smiling faces of our staff will welcome you and lend you a lock for the day.
