Since the early 1970s, Cal Lightweight Rowing has fostered the sport of rowing among UC Berkeley students.
California Lightweight Crew is the club rowing team at the University of California, Berkeley. Known as the ‘Cal Lightweights’ or ‘Cal Lights,’ the team is a member of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association. In the western United States, Cal Lightweight Crew is one of three lightweight women’s rowing teams and remains the sole lightweight men’s rowing team.
The Cal Lightweights row out of the Oakland Athletic Rowing Society (OARS) boathouse, which is a short 15 minute drive from campus. All four of the team’s squads–Men’s Varsity, Women’s Varsity, Men’s Novice, and Women’s Novice operate out of the OARS boathouse, creating a highly team-oriented atmosphere and fostering a unique social experience for ambitious Cal student-athletes.
Above all else, the Cal Lights are about rowing fast, and rowing together. If you are someone who seeks a challenge while forming life-long bonds with teammates, then the Cal Lights Crew is right for you.
