Hearst Pool

Update – In support of the health and safety of the campus community, effective Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m., Rec Sports will CLOSE all facilities, programs, and services through Tuesday, April 7. For full details and continued updates visit: recsports.berkeley.edy/covid-19

Hearst Pool offers regular lap swim hours and includes amenities such as locker rooms, hot showers, day locks, swim suit spinners, and towel service.

Facility Overview

Hearst Gym has three pools. The North Pool is 33 and ⅓ yards in length and includes four lanes for lap swimming. The two smaller pools, the East and West Pools, are open for instructional classes only. They are 20 yards in length with 2 lanes. The water temperature of the three pools is maintained at 71-81 degrees F.

Amenities include locker rooms, hot showers, day locks, swimsuit spinners, kickboards, pool lift, wheelchair access, and towel service.

Who Can Use It?

To access the Hearst pools, you must be a Rec Sports member or purchase a Rec Sports Day Pass (available at the Customer Service Center or Pro Shop Cafe). Be prepared to present proof of membership or purchase to the Hearst Service Center attendant in exchange for a swim tag.


The Hearst Pools are in Hearst Gym, which is located on the south side of campus on Bancroft Way at Bowditch Street. To access the locker room and pools, enter from the east door and proceed down the main corridor. The locker rooms and Service Center are located on the main level. The pools are located on the second level, which can be accessed by the elevator located near the Service Center.

Street parking and local paid lots are both available along Bancroft Way.
