Position Description

Activity Instructors provide supervision and instruction to campers at the Cal Youth Camps. Activity Instructors are supervised by the individual Camp Coordinators and the Cal Youth Camp Director(s). Activity instructors must have experience with children (ages 5 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Instructors must be skilled in the activity that will be taught and/or have received formal training in activity. Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Experience teaching activity as an instructor, coach, etc. is required. Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.

Pay Rate: $14-15 per hour

  • Teach age-appropriate skills in a progressive sequence
  • Run organized and well-executed classes (children not idle or in long lines)
  • Incorporate diverse activities into lessons
  • Develop relationships with all campers, avoid playing favorites
  • Actively involved with all campers, not sitting or disengaged
  • Connect the camp values to the activities in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Promote theme days or group traditions to help campers feel united as a group
  • Help all campers make friends and enjoy the camp experience
  • Display appropriate behavior (action and language) around campers, parents, and staff
  • Provide general supervision (including in locker room) and downtime activities for all campers in his/her care
  • Account for all campers, take attendance regularly, and follow check-in/out procedures
  • Walk children safely between locations and on water/bathroom breaks
  • Assist campers with belongings, lost and found, sunscreen/water, trash pick-up, etc.
  • Resolve disciplinary problems appropriately, complete Incident Reports as needed
  • Demonstrate good judgment
  • Demonstrate responsibility in regard to work schedule, meetings, & trainings
  • Keep equipment, binder, and supplies in order, well maintained, and in the proper location
  • Complete and submit paperwork accurately (timesheets, lesson plans, certifications, etc.)
  • Dress in appropriate attire/uniform
  • Maintain a positive attitude while working, help wherever needed, work well with co-workers
  • Display good customer service skills
  • Accept feedback and make necessary corrections
  • Follow all camp policies and procedures
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as requested by supervisor
  • Ability to relate well to children
  • Previous experience working with children required
Current American Red Cross (or equivalent) certifications in Standard First Aid & CPR (youth, adult) and including AED are strongly recommended for all staff.
