Lifeguards

Becoming a lifeguard is one of the most rewarding positions one could have, but it is no easy task. The lifeguard provides an important public service and creates a safer, happier experience for swimmers just by being poolside and ready to potentially save a life. With people’s lives in your hands, we must require that applicants are qualified individuals with passion and love of swimming and water sports.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Cal Rec Sports lifeguards are expected to:

  • Participate in all staff meetings and trainings.
  • Enforce pool safety rules.
  • Rescue a distressed and/or drowning patron(s).
  • Provide first aid to a distressed patron(s).
  • Assist patrons with membership services including program schedules, facility amenities, answer facility and program-related questions and provide general information when needed.
  • Open and close facility(s) and work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

This is a semester-by-semester position and lifeguards are allowed to request minimal time off throughout any given semester. Aside from major holidays (e.g. Spring Recess, Christmas or Thanksgiving) lifeguards are required to work holidays where we offer programming if their regular schedule calls for it. All lifeguard employees must hold current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, AED and First Aid through American Red Cross (or equivalent certifications in another organization).

Work Hours

Lifeguards may work 5-19 hrs/wk during the Spring/Fall semester and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks. 

Application process

Phase 1: Phone/Video Interview

Applicants will be contacted via phone/video and asked a series of short preliminary questions.

Phase 2: Water Competency Test

In phase 2 of the application process, applicants will be required to demonstrate their rescue skills & knowledge, as well as demonstrate a minimum level of fitness through a water skills test.

Phase 3: In-person Interview

Immediately after the water competency test, the applicant will be interviewed by the Aquatics Administration.

Note: If offered a position on our Lifeguard team, the lifeguard candidate will need to be in possession of documents that prove you are authorized to work in the United States. A list of accepted documents can be found on the last page of Homeland Security Form I-9.

Adult Swimming Instructor

Join the dedicated team at the UC Berkeley pools to help further swimmers’ knowledge and love for the sport as a year-round instructor.

Position

Teach group or private lessons based off American Red Cross standards and programs requirements. Assist users with membership services including program schedules, facility amenities, and general information. Answer facility and program related questions. Open/close facility when needed.

Qualifications

Required: American Red Cross First Aid, CPR & AED. Preferred: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

Work Hours

Students may work 5-20 hrs/wk during the quarter and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks.

Coaches

The Cal Aquatic Masters (CALM) swim team is a 160+ adult swim team located on the Berkeley campus. Our mission is to provide training, coaching, and the opportunity to participate in swimming; promote physical and mental fitness; and to encourage and support interest in competitive swimming.

Position

Assistant coaches are talented individuals who contribute to our continued excellence at the masters swimming level. Swimmer backgrounds range from open water and competitive swimmers to people who just want to stay in shape and become better swimmers. Assistant coaches create a safe, fun, and encouraging on-deck environment while providing feedback to all swimmers in support of their goals.

Qualifications

Required: Current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid; Lifeguard Training required within two months of employment. Possess a passion for the sport of swimming and working with swimmers. Previous experience working with coached swim teams (required) and adult swimmers (preferred). Attend regular SCAM staff meetings.

Work Hours

Variable. Workouts are weekdays 6-9am, 11a-12n, 6-7pm; Saturday 7-10am. 

Weekend Pool Supervisor

Position

The Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA) Weekend Supervisor is responsible for overseeing activities in the SCRA. Those include, but are not limited to: open/close of pool, customer relations, emergency response, and more.

Qualifications

Required: Attention to detail. Must be highly organized, punctual, and reliable.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Effective public and interpersonal skills and interest in working with public.
Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR, or ability to get certified if hired.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. without accommodation.
Work Hours
May – October of each year.
