Employment

Berkeley Rec Sports is one of the largest employers of students on campus.

Why Work for Berkeley Rec Sports?

Not only is Berkeley Rec Sports one of the biggest student employers on campus, it’s also an employer who strives to support its student staff and connect classroom learning with on-the-job lessons. Rec Sports offers a Student Staff Development Council, which serves as an advocate for student employees, as well as resume review sessions that help our students translate their experiences with Berkeley Rec Sports effectively.

Berkeley Rec Sports hires enthusiastic, hard-working student employees who enjoy interacting with our student, faculty, staff, and community members in a positive way. Our members use the recreation facilities to have fun, stay fit, enjoy friendly competition, and relieve stress in a clean, healthy environment.

Our student staff is an integral component in helping us fulfill our Mission to inspire healthy futures together, as well as our Vision and Guiding Principles. In addition to flexible scheduling and convenient on-campus work locations, the department provides student employees with valuable work experience at a competitive wage.

Student Staff Development

Berkeley Rec Sports impacts students’ lives by providing them with opportunities to succeed. These opportunities come in the form of leadership, conflict resolution, customer service, problem solving, and other transferrable skills. By teaching students to understand the nuances of human interaction, leading by example, and autonomy with job responsibilities, Berkeley Rec Sports lets students gain one of the greatest tools in life: experience.

Our program Rec Talks helps student staff make meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they learn on the job. Based on the Iowa GROW model, these connections contribute to overall academic and social success. Through Rec Talks, student employees learn to link the interpersonal expertise gained on the job (such as communication, listening, time-management and people skills) with future career paths and academic coursework.

All student employees and Sport Club Officers with Berkeley Rec Sports have the opportunity to schedule resume review sessions with Staff Development & Student Experience Specialist Chrissy Galli. These 45-minute reviews provide helpful feedback to make their  resumes stand out to future employers.

Our student employees also have an advocate in the Student Staff Development Council. The council provides an avenue for feedback and suggestions between Berkeley Rec Sports student staff and professional staff. Its mission is to create opportunities for student employees’ to expand their professional knowledge and skills, act ethically and increase motivation and community.
