“I love my refusal to give up. I’ve had a lot of stumbling blocks in my life, like I’m sure most people do. I really value that I’m able to pick myself up and keep going. I realize that’s really hard for a lot of people and I understand why…I definitely think my mom dying when I was younger and all the things that should have stopped me became motivating forces. How can I keep going and make sure somebody else experiencing this has the love that they need? And I really love being Black. It took me a long time to get there, but I like my hair, I like my skin. It’s nice to be in a place where I value that there’s space for all kinds of beauty in the world, including my own.”
