IM Sports to Offer Gender Neutral Volleyball League

0

For the Fall 2014 Intramural Sports season, we will offer gender neutral leagues in our Intramural Sports Volleyball program. The gender neutral leagues are called “Open Leagues.” Open leagues are already offered in Basketball, Dodgeball, Flag Football, Indoor Soccer, Soccer, Speed Soccer, and Ultimate. With the addition of Volleyball, all IM sports, except for Softball, will now offer a gender neutral option. Open league softball will be added when the construction at Maxwell Field is complete.

WHAT IS A GENDER NEUTRAL LEAGUE?

We currently offer “CoRec” leagues where men and women play on the same team. In CoRec, there are rules regarding the ratio of male to female players on a team. However, some participants may not wish to identify with a specific gender. In our Open leagues, there is no requirement regarding ratios based on gender identification. In the Open leagues, anyone can participate on a team regardless of how they identify.

WILL OPEN LEAGUES REPLACE THE COREC LEAGUES?

For Volleyball, Ultimate and Flag Football, we will only offer an Open league; there will be no CoRec league offered in those sports. For all of the other sports, we will still offer CoRec leagues where specific ratios of male to female players are maintained. We will also continue to offer all female leagues for some sports.

WHY ARE WE MAKING THIS CHANGE?

The new Open leagues are inspired by the Cal Rec Sports Inclusion Policy, which supports the creation of a safe and fun environment that is accessible to all members of the Cal Community.
