Hearst Field North Restoration

Hearst Field North will soon undergo a soil restoration project thanks to a grant from The Green Initiative Fund! The project was initiated and will be managed by Rec Sports groundskeeper James Sanner.

The goal of the project, which will take place through 2014, is to improve the playing surface, reduce water use, and eliminate synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides.

In order to achieve these goals, a new drought tolerant and resilient strain of grass will be planted. Additionally, irrigation will be managed by moisture sensors linked to smart controllers. The controllers will then communicate the specific amount of water needed, ensuring water is neither over applied nor under applied. Together, these new practices will reduce water use by 25%-35% — a savings of over 250,000 gallons per year!

Ultimately, this restoration project will have long-term benefits for not only the field, but those of us who use it. Thanks again to The Green Initiative Fund for their generous grant!
