Cal Rec Policies

Golden Bear Pool

The Golden Bear Rec Center pool has six 25 yard lanes. The rec pool is located on Sports Lane adjacent to the campus intercollegiate gymnastics building overlooking the bay. Golden Bear pool is home to the Aquatics Masters Swim Team.

  • NO swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • NO diving entries allowed.
  • NO eating, drinking, or smoking allowed on the pool deck.
  • NO glass containers on pool deck.
  • NO running, roughhousing, or unsafe behavior allowed on pool deck or in water.
  • NO bikes, animals, roller blades or skateboards (Exception: Service animals).
  • NO children under 12 allowed in the swimming pool area.
  • Abusive or profane language will not be tolerated.
  • Proper swim attire must be worn at all times (State of California Health Code).
  • Showers are recommended before entering the pool.
  • Circle swim counterclockwise when 2 or more swimmers are sharing a lane.
  • Please observe lap swim etiquette and follow lane speed marker signs.
  • Swimmers should pass only at the wall.
  • If constantly passed, please move to a slower lane. If constantly passing others, please move to a faster lane.
  • While resting at the wall, make room for other swimmers to turn.
  • NO hand paddles.
  • Bathing caps are recommended and may be required in the future.
  • No one will be permitted in the lifeguard chair(s) except the lifeguard.
  • Pool personnel are not responsible for any personal items brought onto the pool deck.
  • Lifeguards have full authority over patrons using the pool area and may enforce rules not listed as situations warrant.

 

Hearst Pool

The marble pool and intricate decking make Hearst pool an architectural landmark. The thirty three and one-third foot, four lane pool is available to campus and community adult rec swimmers year around. This pool is utilized by physical education classes during the academic year as well.

  • NO swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • NO DIVING entries allowed.
  • NO smoking, eating or drinking allowed.
  • NO lotions or glass containers on the pool deck.
  • NO running or roughhousing allowed. Lap swimming only.
  • NO bicycles, skateboards, or animals (exception: service animals) allowed on the pool deck.
  • Abusive or profane language will not be permitted.
  • Swim tickets required to use the pool. Hand ticket to the lifeguard upon entrance.
  • Bathing suits must be worn at all times (State of California Health Code).
  • Caps are required at Hearst pool for hair exceeding shoulder-length.
  • Sunbathing only on the upper levels.
  • Please follow FAST/MED FAST/MED/SLOW speed markers on deck.
  • Circle swimming only.
  • Circle swim counter-clockwise in lanes designated for lap swimming.
  • Move to the appropriate lane if constantly being passed or passing swimmers; faster swimmers should tap the foot of the swimmer they wish to pass; at the end of the lap, the slower swimmer should pause to allow the other to pass.
  • Swimmers must shower before entering the pool.
  • All swimmers with hair length past shoulders must wear a swim cap.
  • Pool personnel are not responsible for any personal items brought to the pool deck.
  • Lifeguards have total authority over everyone in the pool area and may enforce rules not listed as situation warrants.

 

Strawberry Canyon Pool

The natural beauty of the canyon provides a picturesque setting for the two pools, Bay Region style clubhouse, and team building ropes course. The recreational design of the Lucie Stern Pool easily accommodates recreational play and lap swim. The four lap lanes can be configured to 33 1/3 yards or 20 – 25 yards (variable with each lane) depending on the swimming season.

  • NO swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • NO diving allowed except in designated swim areas (the diving tank).
  • NO eating or drinking allowed on pool deck; NO smoking allowed in the facility.
  • NO glass containers on pool deck.
  • NO running, roughhousing, or unsafe behavior allowed on the pool deck or in the water.
  • NO bikes, animals, roller blades, or skateboards (Exception: service animals) allowed in the facility.
  • Proper swim attire must be worn at all times by all patrons using the facility (State of California Health Code).
  • A plastic diaper holder must cover cloth and disposable diapers.
  • Swim diapers are required for children who are not toilet trained.
  • Topless sunbathing and “thong” bathing suits are not allowed in the facility.
  • Each non-swimmers must be accompanied in the pool by an adult within arms length at all times. Note: One adult per non-swimmer.
  • FLOTATION DEVICES are restricted to the shallow area of the pool. Children wearing flotation devices must be accompanied in the water by an adult at all times and within arms length.
  • Toys and swim equipment will be restricted at the discretion of the lifeguard based on safety concerns.
  • NO squirt guns or hard balls (tennis balls, etc) allowed in the pool and facility.
  • RAFTS are restricted based on the number of swimmers in the pool.
  • SCRA kickboards are for lap swim or instructional use only.
  • Bathing caps are recommended but not required.
  • Showers are recommended before entering the pool.
  • NO climbing on or over fences.
  • No one will be permitted in the lifeguard chairs except the lifeguard.
  • Swimmers who have questionable swimming skills will be asked to take the SWIM TEST.
  • 15 minute swim breaks will be called by the lifeguard during high use periods.
  • Pool personnel are not responsible for any personal items brought onto the pool deck.
  • Lifeguards have total authority over everyone in the pool area and may enforce rules not listed as situation warrants.

 

Spieker Aquatic Complex

The Spieker Aquatic Complex houses a fifty meter swimming pool, sun decks and bleachers. It is shared by the intercollegiate aquatic teams: men’s and women’s waterpolo, swimming and diving, and rec swimmers on campus. Rec swimmers must be 16 years or older to swim in Spieker pool.

  • NO swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • NO diving entries allowed.
  • NO smoking, eating, or drinking allowed on pool deck. Food and beverages only on the bleachers or upper deck. No glass containers anywhere in the aquatics facilities.
  • NO running, roughhousing, or unsafe behavior allowed on pool deck or in water.
  • NO bikes, animals, roller blades or skateboards (Exception: Service animals).
  • NO children under 16 allowed in the swimming pool area.
  • Abusive or profane language will not be tolerated.
  • Proper swim attire must be worn at all times (State of California Health Code).
  • Showers are recommended before entering the pool.
  • Caps are required at Spieker Pool for hair exceeding shoulder-length.
  • Kickboards and hand paddles are often restricted to certain lanes; please observe lane markers or the lifeguard’s direction.
  • Circle swim counterclockwise when 2 or more swimmers are sharing a lane. Please swim counter-clockwise, around the black lines at the bottom of the pool.
  • Please observe lap swim etiquette. Lifeguards will enforce lap swimming etiquette as necessary.
  • Please observe the FAST/MEDIUM/SLOW lane marker signs.
  • Within lanes, faster swimmers should tap the foot of the swimmer they wish to pass; at the end of the lap, the slower swimmer should pause to allow the other to pass.
  • If constantly being passed, please move to a slower lane. If constantly passing others, please move to a faster lane.
  • While resting at the wall, make room for swimmers turning.
  • Pool personnel are NOT responsible for any personal items brought to the pool.
  • Check bulletin boards, web site, and hotline for changes in schedules.
  • At no time other than competitive diving team practice are the diving boards to be used.
  • No one will be permitted in the lifeguard chair(s) except the lifeguard.
  • Lifeguards have TOTAL authority over those using the pool and area and may enforce rules as situations warrant.
