Being a lifeguard at Cal Rec Sports is no easy task, but certainly a coveted position.
Each of our lifeguards has passed several rigorous rounds of testing, and dedicates multiple hours a month to continued on-the-job training and emergency response skills practice. There is a great presitige that accompanies working at our pools, and we welcome all dedicated and talented applicants to apply for a position on our team.
At a given time, a Cal Rec Sports lifeguard will: enforce pool safety rules; rescue a distressed and/or drowning person(s); provide first aid; assist users with membership services, including program schedules, facility amenities, and general information; answer facility and program related questions; open and close facility(ies) when needed; and work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
Note: This is a year round position for UCB students. The lifeguard position requires weekend, evening and holiday work as well as work during quarter breaks.
Current certifications of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid.
$13.45 per hour
Students may work 10-20 hrs/wk during the semester, and up to 40 hrs/wk during the academic breaks.
Students:- Download an Application Packet here, or pick one up from the Customer Service Center (CSC) at the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF).
- Submit the completed application to the CSC for processing by the Rec Sports Aquatics Deparment. Write “Attn: Aquatics” at the top right of the application packet.
Non-Students (or Non-Berkeley Students):
- Go to jobs.berkeley.edu to apply through open recruitment as a non-student.
- Search keyword: “lifeguard” to locate the online application.
- Upon completing the online open recruitment application, download a Rec Sports Lifeguard Application Packet, or pick one up from the Customer Service Center (CSC) at the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF).
- Submit the completed application to the CSC for processing by the Rec Sports Aquatics Deparment. Write “Attn: Aquatics” at the top right of the application packet.
Phase 1: In phase 1 of the application process, lifeguards will demonstrate their overall competency and physical fitness. Lifeguard candidates will be required to demonstrate their life-saving and rescue skills, as well as demonstrate a minimum level of fitness in the water.
Phase 2:
If the lifeguard candidate advances to the next phase of the application process, he or she will be invited to an interview with the Aquatics Administration.
