Employment

Recreation & Wellbeing is the second largest student employer on campus. Over 500 student staff members every year help run programs and serve over 45,000 student members and over 10,000 non-student community members across our facilities daily.

Why Work for Recreation and Wellbeing?

Not only is Recreation and Wellbeing one of the biggest student employers on campus, it’s also an employer who strives to support its student staff and connect classroom learning with on-the-job lessons. We hire enthusiastic, hard-working student employees who enjoy interacting with our student, faculty, staff, and community members in a positive way.

Our student staff is an integral component in helping us fulfill our Mission to inspire healthy futures together, as well as our Vision and Guiding Principles. In addition to flexible scheduling and convenient on-campus work locations, the department provides student employees with valuable work experience at a competitive wage.

Tips for Gaining Employment

Recreation and Wellbeing hires over 500+ student employees each year. We encourage interested applicants to use this section to help them prepare for the hiring process.

Best practices:

  1. Update your resume and cover letter
    • Make sure your materials reference the correct job title and department
    • Add a section on your resume called “Relevant Experience” that highlights work, volunteering, or organizational experience you have related to the job
    • Your cover letter does not need to fill an entire page, but should answer the following:
    • What role are you applying for?
    • What relevant experience do you have?
    • Why are you interested in the role?
    • Proof materials for grammar/spelling errors
  2. Be professional in your interview
    • Arrive on-time, or early
    • Dress to impress
    • Research common behavioral-based interview questions and prepare examples to include in possible answers

Student Staff Development

Recreation and Wellbeing impacts students’ lives by providing them with opportunities to succeed. These opportunities come in the form of leadership, conflict resolution, customer service, problem solving, and other transferable skills. By teaching students to understand the nuances of human interaction, leading by example, and autonomy with job responsibilities, Recreation and Wellbeing lets students gain one of the greatest tools in life: experience.

Our program Rec Talks helps student staff make meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they learn on the job. Based on the Iowa GROW model, these connections contribute to overall academic and social success. Through Rec Talks, student employees learn to link the interpersonal expertise gained on the job (such as communication, listening, time-management and people skills) with future career paths and academic coursework.

All student employees and Sport Club Officers with Recreation and Wellbeing have the opportunity to schedule resume review sessions with Associate Director Liz Seal. See above for more tips to assist your application for employment with Recreation and Wellbeing.
